Environmental Impact Assesments for renewable energy projects

As a statutory body the Board is frequently asked to assist in and or comment on the Environmental Impact Assesments for renewable energy projects including wind and hydo power.

Hydro power can clearly impact on fish populations, especially migratory species such as salmon, seatrout, eels and lampreys. Even non migratory fish such as brown trout can move withing a river at spawning times.

Risks to fish populations from Wind power are most prevelant during the construction phase, but thought must be given to infrastructure design to enable continued migratory passage.
