Broodstock have been collected by the Board for
the hatchery
project for
many years. Key to this programme has been the desire
to propagate the most threatened of the species -
spring running fish and those from areas identified
as most under threat via regular monitoring.
The Board has pioneered methods using electric fishing
nets and works closely with SFCC and
the ASFB.
Collected fish are tested for genetics and
some provided to the kelt
reconditioning unit, itself
a unique programme in the UK.
The above photo is rather old. It shows the team
setting up. Today all team members wear full dry
suits.
