Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board Home Page

The Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board is the statutory body empowered to protect and improve the salmon fisheries in the Tay district.

This means looking after not just Atlantic salmon - Salmo Salar but the River Tay as a whole.

This website provides details of its activities, including information on governance, meetings and information on the salmon and salmon fisheries of the River Tay, the largest salmon river in Scotland.

Earlier this year the Scottish Government proposed that from 2016, any proprietor wishing to kill salmon would require a licence and all killed fish would be tagged. We had major concerns with these proposals as shown by our responses to 2 consultations (see here and here) and a briefing here.

However, it was announced on 28/9/15 that the requirement for licences and tagging has been dropped and different proposals made (see Government information here). We welcome this decision to drop these unworkable aspects. As the Tay is considered to be in the most healthy category there is no need to change our current conservation policy. However, in rivers where there is a demonstrated conservation need the proposals appear more proportionate than before. However, we do have concerns over the methodology used to estimate "conservation limits" etc and are very surprised why a river like the Earn should be considered to require total catch and release.

Scottish Ministers are proposing to change the type of organisations that manage Scottish salmon and freshwater fisheries. Details of the process can be found here.

The Board responded to a consultation which closed on 7 August. Our response is available here.
