River Garry - What else must be done?

In order to be assured of restoring a significant self-sustaining salmon population we think that as an absolute minimum the following at least must also be done.

A period of higher flows (freshets) should be included during the autumn to allow salmon access up to spawn.

• The base compensation flow in the Garry should be increased from the 499 l/s proposed. We think that it should be increased to at least 800 l/s as an absolute minimum to better utilise the available width of the channel.

• This additional compensation flow should be introduced from at least two side tributaries, the Allt Geallaidh (at least 50 l/s) and the Allt Anndeir (at least 250 l/s).

• This can only be achieved with some loss of hydro generation. It must be accepted that this has to occur, as indeed the Water Framework Directive accepts.

• The weir at Struan must be removed.

Abstracted stream, the Allt Geallaidh

Significant additional benefits would also be gained by restoring flow to some of the abstracted tributaries, like the Geallaidh.
