River Cononish Chemistry

The Cononish, is the symbolic head of the River Tay. It is the source of some of the earliest and most precious salmon in the world – the famous Loch Tay springers. However, few fish are now found in the Cononish and stocked salmon do not appear to survive well. Brown trout have also declined.

A recent survey found that insects are extremely sparse in the Cononish, although not far away they are abundant and salmon numerous. This problem is probably due to some aspect of the water’s chemistry. Water samples will be taken by Tay Board staff throughout the year and tested by an external laboratory.

When the cause is identified it is hoped a solution may be found to restore this important tributary.
