Cargill's Leap

Cargill's Leap is a narrow waterfall on the River Ericht at Blairgowrie. In higher water the force of the current funnelled through the narrow gap is so great that fish cannot swim through and collect downstream, eventually pushing through once the water is low. Big accumulations of fish can occur here and the fish can become stressed sometimes resulting in outbreaks of disease in which many fish can die. Also, in the past especially, the trapped fish have sometimes been a magnet for poachers.

This summer a project which has been several years in the preparation came to fruition. A firm of blasting specialists was employed and the height of the waterfall was successfully reduced by half a metre and this has already proven to have made it much easier for salmon to get through Cargill's Leap. All the work was done underwater, so there was no visible impact above the water level at this popular tourist spot.
