Japanese Knotweed and Invasive Plants Project

Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed (all non-native plants) are making rapid and serious encroachments on the Tay system.

They are aggressive, spread rapidly by river, crowd out native plants and have a detrimental effect on river ecology, having few natural enemies.

The Board together with the Tay Foundation have therefore undertaken a survey of the extent of these plants along the Tay and its tributaries over the summer of 2006.

The River Tay District Invasive Plants Survey 2006 is now complete.

We urgently request the assistance of all those concerned.

How to erradiate invasive plants.

Japanese Knotweed

Japanese knotweed (above) and Himalayan balsam (below) are aggressive garden escapees which threatens to overwhelm some river’s banks if control measures are not urgently put in place.
